The department of infectious diseases is organized in 1935 (in 2015 it executed 80 years). From 1935 to 1937 the staff of department consisted of 2 people (the prof. Patrick N.P., the prof. Kudryakov V.T.). In difficult 1941 students and teachers of the Kursk, Vitebsk and Odessa institute in this connection, states of department extended up to 9 people joined our institute. Chief physicians of hospital I.P. Beklemishev and A.N. Yurlova were temporarily involved.

For teaching epidemiology from 1943-1944 to 1946-1947 academic years the employee of the Kazakh institute of epidemiology, microbiology and infectious diseases S.I. Demidova was invited. Till 1952 only one associate professor – E.N. Bartoshevich, from 1952 to 1963 two associate professors – A.F. Reformatskaya and T.I. Dmitrovskaya who in connection with the organization of the Almaty institute of Postgaduate Medical Study was transferred to a position of the head of the department in 1964 was on the staff of department.

From 1941 to 1948 at department 3 doctoral dissertations (N.P. Patrick, V.T. Kudryakov, E.N. Bartoshevich) are defended. In the subsequent doctoral dissertations were defended Dmitrovskaya T.I., Kasatkina I.L., Dmitrovsky A.M., Kultayev M.S., Karabekov A.Zh., Zhumagulova A.B., Duysenova A.K., Doskozhayeva S.T., Shopayeva G.A., Egemberdiyeva R.A.

Courses of epidemiology, clinical immunology and allergology which in the subsequent became independent departments were a part of department.

In 1997 the department of tropical illnesses is organized (the manager – associate professor. Ermukhanova N.T.), which in 2002 was a part of the main department. From now on the department wears the name of department of infectious and tropical diseases as at department teaching two disciplines “Infectious diseases” and “Tropical illnesses” is conducted.

For lifetime the department was headed by 10 managers: professors Kudryakov V.T., Patrick N.P., Bartoshevich E.N., Beklemishev I. P., Kasatkina I.L., Belozerov E.S., Karabekov A.Zh., associate professors Reformatskaya A. Ф, Popova S.N., Doskozhayeva S.T.

Since 2008 till present the department is headed by the doctor of medical sciences, professor Duysenova A.K.

In the 2018-2019 academic year, the Department of Dermatology and Venereology was joined and the Department was renamed “Department of Infectious Diseases with a Course of Dermatovenerology”.

From the 2019-2020 academic year, the department was renamed the “Department of Infectious and Tropical Diseases”
